After his success yesterday in another round of primary states, today a leading newspaper is calling on Republicans to unite behind a strategy to deny billionaire reality TV host Donald Trump the GOP nomination. The editorial board of the Washington Post wrote it is a straightforward moral question and “the mission of any responsible Republican should be to block a Trump nomination and election.”

The paper said it wasn’t opposed to the nomination of Trump only on issues, but that he “must be stopped because he presents a threat to American democracy.”

“Does a respect for democracy require the Republican Party to anoint its leading vote-getter? Hardly. We are not advocating that rules be broken, but that they be employed to maximum effect — to force a brokered convention and nominate a conservative candidate who respects the Constitution, or to defeat Mr. Trump in some other way.”

The paper points out that Democrats are enjoying watching Republicans self-destruct.

“The country needs two healthy parties and, ideally, a contest of ideas and ideology — not a slugfest of insults and bigotry.”

Earlier today I wrote that the only strategy left to Republicans would be to prevent him from achieving 1,237 delegates before he arrives in Cleveland, and then nominate a consensus candidate.
