Mention the name Luis Gonzales to any Arizona Diamondbacks fan and immediately a smile will come to their face.

It was the 7th game of the 2001 World Series, the bottom of the 9th inning. Gonzo hit a bloop single off legendary Mariano Rivera, which scored Jay Bell and won the series.

It was the finest moment in Arizona sports history.

Now Gonzales is wading into the political arena to endorse Senator John McCain for reelection in a new television ad.

The McCain campaign is obviously hoping a little of the Gonzo charm will work, as it did in 2010, to remind voters why they’ve backed McCain for the past 35 years.

The ad may help McCain hold off his lesser known opponents in the primary, but a general election win may take even more scoring power.
