Presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump wasted no time tweeting self-congratulations following the tragic shooting in Orlando.
Appreciate the congrats for being right on radical Islamic terrorism, I don’t want congrats, I want toughness & vigilance. We must be smart!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 12, 2016
Trump followed it up by tweeting:
What has happened in Orlando is just the beginning. Our leadership is weak and ineffective. I called it and asked for the ban. Must be tough
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) June 12, 2016
No one is quite sure what Trump “called” (the shooter hated gays and walked into a gay club and started shooting) and whether he is now suggesting there should be a ban on all Muslims, including those American born like the Orlando shooter.
The reaction online to Trump’s tweets was swift and sharp:
.@realDonaldTrump You're congratulating yourself because 50 people are dead this morning in a horrific tragedy?

Once again, Donald, you have shown why you cannot lead us. 50 people are dead, and you bask in congratulations. https://t.co/pUN7ceAff7

Is this the grossest tweet in Twitter history? Yes. I think it is. https://t.co/G8W6UlMyM0

Dear Mr Trump. I'm not sure that today is a day for any kind of congrats and jelly and ice cream. https://t.co/QTaVYe7TJo

Forget presidential, this isn't even a vaguely human way to react to a tragedy. His devotion to ego is infuriating. https://t.co/L8bmrynuCb

Trump is truly an awful person. https://t.co/vQp3CQ9Nmv

"Appreciate the congrats"
For Donald Trump, literally everything is about Donald Trump. https://t.co/5JL4pJv50P
