Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey announced today Sen. John McCain will lie in state at the Arizona Capitol on Wednesday, what would have been McCain’s 82nd birthday.
The public will be able to pay their respects to McCain from 2 to 8 p.m. in the Arizona State Capitol Rotunda.
Only two other people have had the same honor in the last 40 years. Arizona State Senator Marilyn Jarrett lied in state in 2006 and Olympic gold medalist Jesse Owens in 1980.
On Thursday at approximately 9:15 a.m., a motorcade will travel from the Arizona Capitol to North Phoenix Baptist Church at Central Avenue and Bethany Home Road. The motorcade will travel along W Van Buren Street and N Central Avenue.
The memorial service will begin at 10 a.m. Vice President Joe Biden will speak at the Phoenix memorial before flying back to D.C. for the lie in state ceremony.
Tickets are no longer available, however people wishing to show their respect can line the funeral route.
In Washington, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, Speaker of the House Paul Ryan, Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer and House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, announced McCain will lie in state at the United States Capitol Rotunda.
McCain will be just the 13th former senator to lie in state in the Rotunda, an honor typically bestowed upon the country’s “most eminent citizens.”
Finally McCain, a Naval Academy graduate will be buried at the U.S. Naval Academy Cemetery in Annapolis.
