“I am actually very, very serious about running for president, and I strongly feel that if a Kanye West can do it and announce and maybe tease the world that he would maybe one day wanna run for president, why not me?”
De La Hoya was speculating about a run in 2020, perhaps not understanding he would have to challenge Trump for the GOP nomination.
The retired boxer, known as the Golden Boy, said he was inspired to run for president by Trump, the reality star-turned-president of the United States, and other celebrities who have hinted they’re interested in running for the highest office in the country.
De La Hoya said that countless people over the years had told him he should go into politics.
“I’ve had literally, over the years, ever since I became a professional in boxing, I’ve had millions of people tell me, ‘Look, why don’t you represent? Why don’t you stand up and have a bigger voice?’ And obviously, the biggest voice you can have is being president.”
De La Hoya says his team is investigating the feasibility of his run and if it’s successful, he’d run.
His first platform position? Standing for the national anthem. Very timely.
The great news for De La Hoya is that former underwear model Antonio Sabato, Jr., after losing his race for Congress this year, will be available for vice president on his ticket.
