President Trump, after saying earlier today that he feared for America’s men, went on the attack for the first time against Brett Kavanaugh’s accuser Christine Blasey Ford.
Trump, at a campaign rally in Mississippi, mocked Dr. Ford’s testimony before the Senate Judiciary Committee at a rally in Mississippi, casting doubt on her testimony about her alleged sexual assault.
In a one-man re-enactment of her testimony, with his voice alternating between inquisitor and an impression of Ford, Trump challenged the veracity of the testimony that has paused Kavanaugh’s Senate confirmation process.
Trump imitated Ford during her testimony before the crowd, mocking her for not knowing the answer to questions such as how she got to the party.
“I had one beer.’ Well do you think it was… ‘Nope. It was one beer.’ Oh good. How did you get home? ‘I don’t remember.’ How did you get there? ‘I don’t remember.’ Where is the place? ‘I don’t remember.’ How many years ago was it? ‘I don’t know. I don’t know. I don’t know.’ What neighborhood was it in? ‘I don’t know.’ Where’s the house? ‘I don’t know. Upstairs. Downstairs. I don’t know. But I had one beer that’s the only thing I remember.’”
Trump said that the Democrats opposed to Kavanaugh’s nomination are “evil people” who are out to “destroy people.”
As soon as Trump mentioned Kavanaugh’s name, the crowd at the rally began chanting, “We want Kavanaugh!”
The ridicule of Ford, delivered at the Landers Arena here in deeply conservative DeSoto County, is in stark contrast to the respectful way in which Trump and his aides had previously treated Ford’s testimony, even as they have stood by Kavanaugh and his assertion that he never assaulted her or anyone else.
Earlier today, Trump told reporters, “It’s a very scary time for young men in America, when you can be guilty of something that you may not be guilty of. This is a very difficult time.”
The Senate has delayed a final vote on Kavanaugh’s confirmation while the FBI looks into multiple allegations of sexual misconduct — all of which he denies — that have been lodged against him.
The president’s tone on Ford’s testimony stood in sharp contrast to his assessment last week. “I thought her testimony was very compelling, and she looks like a very fine woman to me, very fine woman,” Trump said of Ford while speaking to reporters on Friday.
