It’s a friendship that makes you wonder whether Captain Kirk ever came across Lucifer on his “five year mission” to “explore strange new worlds.”

Because Hell would probably be the strangest world of all.

That said, Tom Ellis and William Shatner became fast friends after the former Star Trek captain helped out the #SaveLucifer campaign in ’18.

Last October, when the James T. Kirk Bourbon premiered to great fanfare, Shatner sent Ellis an autographed bottle.

Ellis waited awhile, but finally promoted it on social media yesterday, writing: “Had a very exciting gift this morning…thank you very much @williamshatner I’ll make sure it gets drunk!”

Shatner wrote in the letter to Tom that the “bourbon is really good,” and added there was “no obligation except don’t choke on it.”

Dear Tom,

I have received a lot of promotional material in my time. I would say just about all of it I have dumped. But focusing here this bourbon is really good.

Please enjoy it with no obligation except don’t choke on it.

Many thanks,

William Shatner

Ellis said kind things about Shatner last year after the star of T.J. Hooker and Boston Legal came to Lucifer’s defense after it was canceled by Fox.

“The one person I talked with was William Shatner,” Ellis said in an interview. “He joined our Twitter campaign very early. He put himself out there and said it was a really great show. He was the first of many celebrity endorsements.”

James T. Kirk Bourbon

Created to celebrate “Captain James T. Kirk’s bold spirit of adventure,” the bottle design was influenced by Star Trek “behind the scenes” veteran, graphic designer, Mike Okuda.

Silver Screen Bottling Company’s website says: A serious Bourbon selected from choice barrels from Kentucky, Tennessee, and Indiana. Aging in range from 4 years old to 12 years old, each small batch release of James T. Kirk Bourbon exhibits a depth and richness seen in only the finest Bourbon. Crafted with the highest respect for the whiskey and for the man that bears its name, James T. Kirk Straight Bourbon Whiskey is for the serious Star Trek fan and serious Bourbon fan, alike.

Some interesting notes:

  • Under license by CBS Consumer Products, Silver Screen Bottling Company launched a Star Trek branded spirits line last year.
  • Vital Stats: 12 years old; 90 proof (45% ABV); ~ $60 per 750ml bottle
  • Appearance: Light amber. On the bottle, there’s a James T. Kirk “autograph” as well as various insignias associated with the Star Trek brand.
  • Nose: Notes of honey, leather, slightly astringent.
  • Palate: Medium bodied, on the sweet side. Think maple and graham cracker. Finishes with a whisper of oak and then is gone.

Perhaps there’s no greater gift Captain Kirk can present to Lucifer than his autograph on his own bourbon bottle!

As Tom wrote about Bill Shatner last year, “Love you captain.”
