A fringe political group that supports President Trump has claimed responsibility for planting the woman who screamed ‘we got to start eating babies’ in response to climate change at a town hall meeting for Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.

The Lyndon LaRouche PAC claimed responsibility for Thursday’s stunt, writing in a tweet: ‘It was us. Malthusianism isn’t new, Jonathan Swift knew that. Sometimes, only satire works.’

Swift, the 18th century satirist, famously proposed eating babies in ‘A Modest Proposal,’ an essay rebutting the Malthusian theory that catastrophic famines would always limit population and economic growth.

A video of the woman’s comments went viral, with retweets from President Trump and his son Don Jr.

From the outset, many questioned the validity of the video, speculating that the woman was planted there by a group or was suffering from a mental condition.

“We’re not going to be here for much longer because of the climate crisis! We only have a few months left! I love that you support the Green Deal but getting rid of fossil fuel is not going to solve the problem fast enough,” the woman said. “I think your next campaign slogan has to be this, we got to start eating babies.”

LaRouchePac is an economic PAC that advocates for the policies championed by Lyndon LaRouche, a conspiracy theorist and political activist who ran for president multiple times.

As the video went viral, Ocasio-Cortez, who has called for a Green New Deal to combat the climate crisis, called for those critical of the woman’s rant to show some restraint, suggesting she may be ‘suffering from a mental condition.’

This morning, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted that the woman’s affiliation with the group “doesn’t rule out potential mental issue (Drs do that) but good to know they were not in crisis.”

Ocasio-Cortez later tweeted that the woman had been an audience plant.

‘Turns out the woman yelling was a Trump supporter,’ she wrote.

Neither Trump has apologized or removed their factually incorrect tweets.
