As Lashana Lynch gets set to take over from Daniel Craig as the first female 007 in No Time To Die, a petition to back Tom Ellis for the iconic role is growing.

Traditionalists to the Ian Fleming novels can relax: Lynch is not the new James Bond, but a new character who takes over his secret agent number after he leaves MI6.

So she’s 007, but not Bond. James Bond.

Lynch is playing a brand new character, Nomi, in the film, and it’s not known whether she will become the central figure when Craig bows out.

The 32-year-old British actress looks stunning in the new imagery, wearing a navy spy suit complete with leather waist and gun holster.

The story begins with Bond retired in Jamaica, but spymaster M – played by Ralph Fiennes – calls him back in desperation to tackle a new global crisis.

A movie insider said: ‘There is a pivotal scene at the start of the film where M says ‘Come in 007’, and in walks Lashana who is black, beautiful and a woman. It’s a popcorn-dropping moment. Bond is still Bond but he’s been replaced as 007 by this stunning woman.”

As soon as her Nomi appears, she warns that “the world’s moved on, Commander Bond” before promising him: “You get in my way and I will put a bullet in your knee … the one that works.”

That’s quite the introduction, literally threatening to kneecap the old guard if it gets in her way.

Lucifer’s Tom Ellis should be the next James Bond.

If Lynch is not Bond, that leaves the question of who will be the next secret agent very much up in the air.

And that keeps Ellis firmly on the list.

A petition on Change.org backing Ellis is now over 3,000 strong.

Ellis has played the devil with charm and anger and wit for five seasons, so the transition to Bond, with all his action-packed moodiness, should be simple.

His role as the snarky and devilish Lucifer has actually just been a extra long audition for one of the premiere jobs in Hollywood.

Let’s review:

Ellis looks good in Bond suit:

He looks like Bond in a tux:

He looks good like Bond in next-to-nothing:

He looks like Bond with a gun:

He looks like Bond just standing around:

He looks like Bond with the ladies:

He looks like Bond with the guys:

He looks like Bond in…this:

Okay, maybe that last one didn’t help.

But you get the point.

The truth is Ellis combines the studliness of Sean Connery, with the wit of Roger Moore, the ease of Pierce Bronson, and the pissed-off-at-the-world attitude of Daniel Craig.

Make him the seventh Bond and he fits right in.

[My Take: Lucifer Does More To Promote Christianity Than Other Heavenly Shows]

Meanwhile, fans have already created some 007 posters:

In reality, we all love Lucifer – men, women, children and small animals alike.

But playing the devil will soon come to an end.

And in case you’re wondering if Tom is up for it, he tweeted earlier this year he was in:
