President Trump said today that he would cancel the GOP convention events in Jacksonville, Florida, in August, saying it wasn’t the right time due to the coronavirus.
“I told my team it’s time to cancel the Jacksonville component of the GOP convention,” Trump told reporters at a news conference at the White House. “I’ll still do a convention speech in a different form, but we won’t do a big crowded convention.”
Trump said the official nomination business would still take place in Charlotte, N.C.
Trump announced the new RNC plan will include tele-rallies and online events for the week of the planned RNC.
Trump said he will still make a convention speech, but said it will de in a different form this year.
“We won’t do a big crowded convention per se, it’s just not the time,” Trump announced.
Trump moved parts of the GOP convention to Florida last month amid a dispute with North Carolina’s Democratic leaders over holding an event indoors with maskless supporters.
But those plans were steadily scaled back as virus cases spiked in Florida and much of the country over the last month.
