Senator Rand Paul announced on April Fools’ Day that he will back Donald Trump if he is the GOP nominee. And that’s no joke.
“I think we never get the candidate we exactly want unless you’re the candidate,” Paul said.
That’s in stark contrast to his father, Ron Paul, who made it clear earlier this week that he would not vote for Trump or Hillary Clinton.
In 2012, in fact, Paul said about Trump: “I don’t think he has that much credibility. I’m the only candidate that didn’t kiss his ring. I don’t understand why people pay any attention to him.” Later, Paul called Trump a “dangerous authoritarian on a power trip.”
Ron Paul ran two unsuccessful campaigns for the GOP presidential nomination, and was the Libertarian nominee in 1988. Rand Paul ran a fairly awful campaign for the GOP nomination this year.
