Donald Trump won Kansas by more than 20 points two years ago, but his hand-picked candidate for governor Kris Kobach went down to a massive defeat, losing to Democrat Laura Kelly.
Although the state is deeply conservative, Kobach’s aggressive campaign, which included a Jeep with a replica machine gun, helped tighten it.
Also in Kansas, Democrat Sharice Davids, a former White House fellow, ousted four-term Republican incumbent Rep. Kevin Yoder in Kansas’ 3rd Congressional District.
Davids is a member of the Ho-Chunk Nation, and is the first Native American woman elected to Congress
The district narrowly went for Hillary Clinton in 2016 but has not elected a Democrat to Congress in a decade.
