When Donald Trump supporters recorded themselves during the coronavirus lockdown singing “M-A-G-A” to the tune of the Village People’s “YMCA”, you would have never guessed it would be the most talked about post in our Facebook page history.

But that’s what happened.

The video has reached over 180,000 people in just four days on my Facebook page, with nearly 40,000 engagements.

It has been shared on over 1,000 pages, and there are hundreds of comments, most ridiculing the dancers who are dancing to a tune originally dedicated to gay sex.

The irony is rich.

The visual similarities in the video are obvious: guns, American flags and angry placards which don’t always make a lot of sense.

But that song?

Flattening the curve has emerged as one of the most contentious issues in politics, with pockets of Americans spilling out onto streets in recent weeks to protest against stay-at-home orders.

Enraged Trump-supporters have dubbed the measures enforced to protect them and their loved ones from a deadly disease a “culture war”.

A minority of Americans believe the government has gone too far in trying to contain the coronavirus, with an April 24 protest in Madison, Wisconsin, being the latest in a handful of demonstrations.

The surreal scene of the protest against lockdown measures in Wisconsin went viral, and things may never be the same again.

This actually isn’t the first time the song has been sung by Trump’s supporters.

It’s quite common for his supporters to sing YMCA at rallies.

On Trump’s state visit to India, he walked out on stage to ‘Macho Man’, another Village People song.

The band even said earlier this year that their fans want them to ban Trump from using their music.

So maybe Trump’s just a really big fan?

Regardless, the song has a special place in gay culture.

The song celebrates YMCA’s reputation as a popular cruising and hookup spot, particularly for younger men.

So it seems like a surprise that ardent supporters of Trump, who aren’t exactly known for being pro-LGBTQ+ (to put it mildly), would be embracing this particular song.

But this is America, so keep dancing MAGA!
