It was January 20, 1993. President George Bush was preparing to leave the Oval Office for the last time. He had been defeated by Gov. Bill Clinton the previous November, making him a one term president.

He could have been angry. He could have been bitter.

Instead, Bush sat down and penned this note to his successor:

This is the way it is meant to work. We have elections, sometimes bitterly fought, and then we move forward together.

A person who cannot accept the verdict of the American people should probably not be their president.
